Pharmacy and pharmaceutical packaging are specialised bags for the assembly of pharmaceutical and pharmacy-standard products: powder blends, tablet portions, ointments, tinctures, capsules, samples for laboratory analysis, compounded preparations and galenic preparations.

The main requirements are labellability (for batch number, expiry date, patient name, pharmacy stamp), secure reclosability (ziplock mechanism), food certification in accordance with EU 10/2011 (for oral applications) and material purity without migration contamination.

Typical materials: LDPE 50–90 microns transparent with a printed write-on panel, OPP film for single powder portions, parchment cone bags for classic over-the-counter pharmacy assembly, kraft paper bags for dry pharmacy blends.

Material properties of pharmacy packaging in detail

Pharmacy and pharmaceutical packaging require material purity without migration contamination, a secure closure mechanism and labellability. The choice of material depends on the application and the sensitivity of the active ingredient.

LDPE 50 microns transparent — the standard with write-on panel

Crystal-clear polyethylene film with a printed matt strip at the top right. Writable with ballpoint pen, pencil, waterproof marker. Ziplock made from the same LDPE material. Standard format sizes from 40×60 mm.

LDPE 90 microns — extra strong for bulk quantities

Reinforced film thickness for hospital pharmacies and bulk powder quantities. Higher tear resistance, longer service life with repeated reuse. Suitable for sharp-edged powders (e.g. crystalline substances).

OPP 30 microns — single powder portions

Crystal-clear polypropylene film with high rigidity. Brilliant contents visibility, ideal for single powder portions, tablet display packaging. Ziplock in an OPP variant with a double lip.

Wet-strength parchment substitute — medicinal herbs and teas

Speciality paper with wet strength and breathability. The standard for medicinal herbs, naturopathy teas, Bach flower powders. Certified food-grade, classic pharmacy look.

Mono-PP — high-temperature variant

On request, polypropylene bags sterilisable up to 121 °C for autoclavable applications. Microwave-safe, suitable for hot-fillable ointments and gels.

Custom options – printing, special sizes and tear notch

Pharmacy packaging can be produced with a pharmacy logo, special sizes and special closure mechanisms.

Printing process

Printing in flexographic print with up to 4 colours, including simple Pantone colours for the pharmacy logo. Printing across the front of the bag or as a small logo in the corner. On request, additional printed notes such as "Protect from sunlight" or "Store at room temperature".

Special sizes and tear notch

Format adjustments freely selectable from 40×60 mm to 300×400 mm. Material thickness 50, 60, 70 or 90 microns. On request, an integrated tear notch below the ziplock for easy opening — important for geriatric pharmacies and patients with limited fine motor skills.

Write-on panel layout

Standard write-on panel: a matt white strip at the top right (20×60 mm). On request, a customised labelling layout with pre-printed lines for batch number, expiry date, patient name and pharmacy stamp.

Sustainability – pharmacy packaging and PPWR compliance

Pharmacy packaging made from LDPE is mono-material recyclable and meets the EU Packaging Regulation from 2030.

Mono-PE recycling

Pure LDPE ziplock bags are identified as polyethylene in German sorting plants via near-infrared detection (NIR) and fed into the PE recycling stream. The ziplock is made from the same material and does not interfere with recycling. Disposal via the yellow recycling bag.

Residual contents before disposal

Pharmaceutical packaging must be freed of residual active ingredients before disposal — many active ingredients are toxic to aquatic organisms and belong in hazardous waste, not in the recycling stream. Pharmacy staff should observe the disposal routes here in accordance with the German Medicines Act (AMG).

Recycled-content processing

For commercial pharmacy applications (e.g. packaging secondary materials without direct active-ingredient contact) we process post-consumer recycled content at 30–50 %. For direct active-ingredient contact, the PCR proportion is limited owing to EU requirements.

PPWR compliance from 2030

LDPE pharmacy bags already meet the EU Packaging Regulation today. For pharmacies with extended recycling obligations, we advise on material efficiency through the optimal choice of wall thickness: 50 microns is sufficient for dry powders, 70–90 microns for sharp-edged crystalline substances.

Which format sizes are available?

From 40×60 mm mini bags for single doses to 300×400 mm bulk bags for hospital pharmacies. Standard formats from stock, special sizes subject to a minimum order quantity for custom production on request.

Can the bags be sterilised?

LDPE bags are not autoclavable (melting point approx. 105 °C). For sterile applications we recommend mono-PP bags (sterilisable up to 121 °C) — please contact us specifically for these.

Are there bags with a tear notch for pharmacies?

Yes — on request, ziplock bags with an integrated tear notch below the ziplock for easy opening by patients with limited fine motor skills (a typical requirement in geriatric pharmacies).

How secure is the ziplock?

The double-lip ziplock is not child-resistant. For child-resistant packaging (e.g. prescription medicines), special test tubes or childproof containers are required — we do not carry these.

Can I have bags printed with a pharmacy logo?

Yes — flexographic printing with up to 4 colours, including simple Pantone colours. Minimum order quantity on request for printed custom production. Delivery time on request. Make an enquiry.

Which bags for medicinal herbs and naturopathy?

For medicinal herbs and Bach flower blends, parchment cone bags (breathable, classic look) or small food-grade ziplock bags for reclosable applications are suitable.

Is the packaging PPWR-compliant?

LDPE ziplock bags are mono-material recyclable in the PE stream and meet the EU Packaging Regulation from 2030. NIR-detectable in German sorting plants, compliant with the RecyClass design guideline.
