What are food-grade side gusset bags?

Food-grade side gusset bags are approved for direct contact with food and meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on materials for food contact. They are made of pure LDPE granulate (or laminate film with a food-grade inner layer) and contain no plasticisers, no harmful additives and no printing inks in the food contact area. The side gusset design makes them the cost-efficient standard solution for voluminous food contents.

The range of applications is wide: bakeries pack loaves, rolls and pastry ranges, food manufacturers pre-portioned components, direct marketers farm shop ranges, professional kitchens mise-en-place components. They are also common in mail order for direct food customers – they reliably protect the contents while being more cost-efficient than more complex packaging forms.

Frequently asked questions about food-grade side gusset bags

Are all side gusset bags automatically food-grade?

No. Food safety requires a specific choice of material and testing during production. Standard industrial side gusset bags may contain additives that rule out food contact. Look for the explicit note “food-grade to EU 10/2011”.

What is a declaration of conformity (DoC)?

The Declaration of Compliance is a manufacturer document confirming compliance with EU 10/2011. For HACCP-certified operations it is usually a mandatory document in the supplier assessment file.

Which film for baked goods?

For fresh baked goods, breathable film is important, otherwise condensation forms and the flavour suffers. Standard LDPE is a good choice. For frozen baked goods we recommend 70 microns with better cold resistance.

Can the bags be frozen?

Yes, LDPE is cold-resistant down to -40 °C. For frequent freezer use we recommend 70 microns or thicker, as thin film can become brittle at very low temperatures.

Are the bags microwave-safe?

NO. LDPE melts above 100 °C – not microwave-safe. For microwave-suitable food bags there are special PP films.

Can the bags be used for sous-vide?

NO. Sous-vide requires special films with heat resistance above 80 °C. Standard LDPE is not suitable for this.

How are the bags closed?

With adhesive tape, a heat sealer or a clip band closure. For professional use, heat sealers are the efficient solution. For farm shops and direct marketing, clip bands with a twist closure are common.

Are sustainable food side gusset bags available?

Yes, bio-PE variants (virgin material) are available in food-grade quality. rLDPE/recyclate variants are still undergoing testing for food-contact suitability and are currently not approved for direct food contact.

Which printing suits bakeries and manufacturers?

Mineral-oil-free, food-grade printing inks are standard. Bakeries often work with a kraft-paper-imitating look plus a logo. Manufacturers, with minimalist natural-food designs.

What must appear on the packaging under the FIC Regulation?

The name, the list of ingredients for mixtures, the net quantity, the best-before date, the responsible operator and allergens. For organic products, additionally the EU organic logo and the organic control body.

Are the bags also food-grade in the transparent variant?

Yes, transparent side gusset bags are available in a food-grade LDPE variant. They combine visibility with EU 10/2011 compliance.
