For carrier bags there are four key approaches: FSC-certified kraft paper with verifiable forestry, recycled paper from the waste paper stream, organic cotton with GOTS certification for fabric bags, and recycled polyester (rPET) for robust reusable applications. The right choice depends on brand positioning, duration of use and consumer acceptance.

For single-use applications (sales counter, fashion boutique), FSC kraft paper carrier bags are usually the right choice: cost-efficient, biodegradable, recyclable in the waste paper stream. For reusable applications (yoga studios, refill concepts, long-lasting brand presence with the end customer), organic cotton fabric bags or rPET polyester bags make sense. They are reused by the end customer over months or years, which improves the environmental footprint well beyond the moment of purchase.

Frequently asked questions about sustainable carrier bags

Which material is the most sustainable?

For single use: FSC kraft paper or recycled paper. For reuse: GOTS-certified organic cotton or rPET. The ecological advantage depends on the duration of use – reusable bags are more sustainable over years than single-use options.

What does FSC certification mean?

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certifies responsible forestry. The wood from which the paper was made comes from sustainably managed forests. For organic brands with eco credentials, FSC is usually mandatory evidence.

What does GOTS certification mean?

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies organically grown natural fibres – organic cotton, organic wool, organic hemp. For sustainable fabric bags, GOTS is the highest standard.

What does rPET mean?

rPET is recycled polyester from waste plastic (often PET bottles). The recycling rate can be up to 100%. For robust reusable bags, rPET is a sensible alternative to organic cotton.

Are the bags biodegradable?

Kraft paper and recycled paper: yes. Organic cotton: yes (over a longer period). rPET: no – but recyclable again. For industrially compostable applications we recommend PLA-coated paper variants.

Which printing is sustainable?

Mineral-oil-free and water-based printing inks are the most sustainable choice. They preserve recyclability and are harmless for end-customer contact.

Can organic logos be printed?

Yes, provided the corresponding certificates are in place. The EU organic logo, Demeter, Naturland, FSC, GOTS can be printed. For organic brands with multiple certificates we recommend multi-logo designs.

What may I communicate?

Verifiable facts: “made from FSC-certified paper”, “made from 100% recycled material”, “organic cotton GOTS”. Avoid vague wording such as “eco-friendly” or “green” without evidence – it is legally tricky.

How long does an organic cotton carrier bag last?

With normal use, several years. Machine-washable at 30–40 °C. When ironing, take care around the unfolded logo – the printed motif can wear off.

What do sustainable carrier bags cost?

FSC kraft paper: 20–80 cents depending on size. Organic cotton: 1–3 EUR depending on fabric quality. rPET: 80 cents–2 EUR. Significantly below this with graduated prices for larger runs. For organic brands the surcharge quickly pays off through end-customer acceptance.

How sustainable is shipping?

Which run makes sense?
