Bag Closures & Clip Ties – Clip Tape Closures and U-Clips for Packaging Bags

Bag closures are the fastest way to securely close bread, confectionery and packaging bags. With clip band ties you twist the closure shut by hand (twist tie), while with U-clips a twist-tie machine clamps the bag neck in seconds.

In the range: U-clips 33 & 40 mm plus clip band ties gold/white as a compact collection. U-clips are U-shaped aluminium clamps for twist-tie machines. Clip bands have a steel wire core with a paper coating.

Suitable for practically all open bags: cross bottom bags, flat bags, paper carrier bags, cone bags. Food-safe certified where required.

Typical for bakeries, confectionery sales, farm shops and the pet food industry. From our German warehouse since 1972. No minimum purchase on the standard range.

What Are Bag Closures and Clip Ties?

Bag closures and clip ties are accessories for securely closing bags: U-clips made of galvanized steel, plastic clip tapes, tin-tie closures with a paper sheath, or simple hand-tie strips.

They are used wherever bags aren't packaged with an integrated closure (zipper, ziplock, adhesive flap) — typically in bakeries for bread bags, in food artisan production for stand-up pouches without a zip, and in industry and logistics for standard PE sacks.

Materials: galvanized steel (food-safe), PE plastic with a steel wire core, paper-sheathed wire (tin-tie), PE strips.

02

What Are Bag Closures Suitable For?

  • Closing bakery and confectionery bags: classic bread-bag closure with U-clips or clip tapes.
  • Food bags without an integrated closure: tin-tie closure for stand-up pouches or side gusset bags.
  • Heavy-duty industrial sacks: reinforced clip tapes for bulk material bags, carton liners.
  • Fresh produce packaging: manual closures for direct marketers, farm shops, market stalls.
  • Commercial warehouse packing: machine clip-closing lines for standard bags.
  • Reclosure solutions: tin-tie for bags that need to be opened repeatedly at home.
03

What Bag Closure Variants Are Available?

The choice depends on machine processability, bag material and food suitability:

  • U-clips made of galvanized steel: classic machine-closing solution, food-safe, suitable for commercial closing lines.
  • Plastic clip tapes: flexible PE tapes with a steel wire core — can be processed manually or by machine.
  • Tin-tie closures: paper-sheathed double-wire closures, classic for premium coffee and bakery bags.
  • Hand-tie knots: narrow PE strips for manual small-quantity packaging.
  • Reinforced industrial clips: for heavy PE sacks and bulk material bags.
  • Color-coded variants: tin-tie in various colors for content identification in the shipping warehouse.

Material Properties of Bag Closures in Detail

Bag closures are accessories for closing standard bags: clip tapes, knot closures, tin-tie wires. Material determines suitability for food or commercial use.

U-Clips made of galvanized steel

Classic U-shaped steel clips for machine bag closing. Galvanized for corrosion protection, food-safe to EU standard. Standard for bakery bread packaging, commercial closing lines.

Clip tapes made of plastic

Polyethylene plastic tapes with a steel wire core, flexible and tear-resistant. Can be processed manually or by machine. Standard for food bag closure and commercial packing.

Tin-tie closures

Paper-sheathed double-wire closures, classic for coffee, tea and bakery bags. Closed by hand and can be reopened repeatedly. Standard length 80–200 mm.

Hand-tie knots

Narrow PE strips for manual bag closing — typical for small-quantity packaging at farm shops or direct sales. Cost-effective and easy to process.

Material specifications

Steel clips certified to food contact standard EU 10/2011. Tin-tie closures with a food-safe paper sheath. Declaration of conformity on request.

Sustainability — Bag Closures in a Recycling Context

Bag closures are small components with a big recycling impact — ideally they should be disposed of separately from the bag to keep the material stream pure.

Steel clips — dispose of separately

U-clips made of galvanized steel belong in the metal collection stream (yellow bag or recycling bin). In recycling facilities they are separated from the film stream via magnetic separation — but remain valuable in metal recycling.

Tin-tie closures — mixed material

Tin-tie closures are mixed packaging made of paper and metal wire, and therefore go into general waste. For sustainability-focused brands, we recommend avoiding them in favor of zipper reclosures built into the bag itself.

Plastic clip tapes

PE clip tapes belong in the yellow bag and are recovered in the PE recycling stream, provided they are separated from the bag. When choosing between steel and plastic: steel has a higher recycling value, plastic is ecologically lighter.

PPWR compliance

As packaging components, bag closures are subject to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. For brands with extended recycling obligations, we advise on integrated reclosure solutions (zipper, adhesive pad) instead of separate closure components.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bag Closures & Clip Ties

What is a bag closure?

A flexible closure device for open bags – either as a clip tape closure (steel wire with a paper/plastic sheath, twistable by hand) or as a U-clip (aluminium wire clip for a twist-tie machine). A classic for bakery, confectionery and food packaging.

What's the difference between clip tape and U-clip?

Clip tape (twist tie): a flexible tape with a wire core, twisted by hand. U-clip: a U-shaped aluminium wire clip, clamped with a machine or pliers. U-clips are more efficient for mass production.

Which U-clip size do I need?

U-Clips 33 mm: standard for smaller bags (bakery bags, confectionery, standard films). U-Clips 40 mm: for larger bags or heavier wall thicknesses (pet food, industrial).

Which twist-tie machines are compatible?

U-Clips 33 mm and 40 mm fit all common twist-tie machines on the market (Bosch, GAB, Maerz, Star Ind. and others). Check your machine model before ordering.

What color clip tape closure?

White: neutral, classic for bakery and standard applications. Gold: decorative, elegant for gift packaging, premium confectionery, confectionery gift bags, festive bakery items.

Are the clip tapes food-safe?

Yes – standard clip tape closures have a food-safe outer sheath. The materials are tested for direct food contact (as they clamp around the bag). Declaration of conformity on request.

How many clip tapes per roll?

Typically 1,000–2,000 pieces per roll, depending on the length of the individual clip tape. Exact quantity is stated in the product description.

Which bags can I close with these?

Practically all open bags: cross-bottom bags, flat bags, paper carrier bags, twist bags, bread bags, confectionery bags.

Are U-clips stable and secure?

Yes – the aluminium wire clamps firmly around the bag neck. When clamped with a twist-tie machine, it forms a permanently secure closure that is only removed by deliberate opening.

Can they be printed with a logo?

Clip tapes are available as a custom production with individual printing (logo, brand, slogan). → Request a custom production.

Are the closures recyclable?

The steel/aluminium wire core is recyclable by material type (metal cycle). The paper outer sheath is recyclable with waste paper. Recyclable by material type.

What minimum quantity do I need?

For the standard range (U-Clips 33/40 mm, clip tapes gold/white) there's no minimum order – you can even order single rolls. For custom production, a higher quantity applies.

How long do the clip tapes stay closed?

Twisting multiple times gives a permanently secure closure. The material doesn't age faster than the bag itself – several weeks to months without loss of strength.
