What are stand-up pouches for coffee?

Stand-up pouches for coffee – also called coffee doypacks, coffee stand-up pouches or coffee bags with a bottom gusset – are the free-standing doypack construction made specially for coffee roasteries and cafés. They differ from flat coffee bags in their built-in bottom gusset, which gives the bag a stable stance on the sales shelf when filled.

Freshly roasted coffee places two special demands on the packaging: first, it releases CO₂ for several days – which is why a one-way aroma valve is needed that lets CO₂ escape but does not let oxygen through. Second, coffee is extremely aroma-sensitive – an aluminum composite inner layer or a high-quality barrier film is essential.

Material: composite film with an aluminum inner layer (the standard for specialty coffee) or kraft-paper outside with an internal aluminum barrier (an organic look). Certified food-grade to EU 10/2011. A roast-date stamp field is recommended as a freshness indicator.

Compared with the block construction (see block bottom bags for coffee), the stand-up variant is more flexible to fill and more cost-effective; the block looks more elegant and stacks better on the shelf.

Do I really need an aroma valve for coffee packaging?

For freshly roasted coffee (packed within 7–10 days of roasting): YES, the valve is indispensable. Fresh coffee releases CO₂ for several days – without a valve the bag bursts within hours or swells up considerably. For coffee aged by the “frosting method” (10+ days of resting), a valve is not mandatory but recommended.

What wall thickness do stand-up pouches for coffee have?

Standard composite wall thickness is 100–140 microns. For 250 g of coffee, 100 microns is enough; for 1 kg we recommend 120 microns or more. The aluminum inner layer is an additional 7–9 microns. Robust against typical shipping stresses.

Which size for 250 g of coffee?

Classically 130×220 mm for 250 g of beans – standard on most shelves. For specialty coffee often 90×180 mm at a 100 g trial format. For 500 g, 160×270 mm; for 1 kg, 200×330 mm. Special sizes for a distinctive brand look are possible.

Certified food-grade?

Yes, all stand-up pouches for coffee are certified to EU 10/2011. The inner PE layer is food-grade and comes into direct contact with the coffee. A declaration of conformity is supplied on request.

Are different variants needed for beans or ground coffee?

Both work well with the same construction. Ground coffee oxidises faster and needs aroma protection even more – the aluminum variant is particularly important. For beans, a standard composite with a valve is often enough. See also coffee bags for beans & ground coffee.

What is the difference between a stand-up pouch and a block bottom bag for coffee?

The stand-up pouch has a bottom gusset, is more flexible to fill and more economical. The block bottom bag has a rectangular base, looks more elegant and stacks better on the shelf, at a slightly higher cost. Both equally suitable for aroma protection. Choice depends on brand positioning. → block bottom bag variant.

Is a zip closure recommended?

For end-customer storage, absolutely: a zip closure allows repeated opening without aroma loss. Slightly more expensive per bag than without a zip, but an essential comfort feature for private consumers. High-quality ziplock closures last 500+ opening cycles.

Is a roast-date stamp field necessary?

For specialty coffee, an absolute recommendation – the reserved field for stamping the roast date yourself is standard in the premium sector. An important freshness signal for end customers. For industrial roasts with a fixed best-before date, the field can also be printed.

How long does coffee keep in stand-up pouches?

In unopened packaging with an aluminum inside and a valve: 12–18 months of aroma preservation. Without aluminum (composite only): 6–12 months. After opening with a zip closure: 4–6 weeks of premium aroma, after which it is still drinkable but with increasing aroma loss.

Printable with an individual brand identity?

Yes – flexographic printing (cost-effective), gravure printing (premium for high runs) or digital printing (standard quantities under 1,000 units). Full back-label printing with variety, region, processing, altitude, tasting notes is possible. → request custom production.
