What are flat bags for shipping?

Flat bags for shipping are the parcel-suitable specialisation of the classic LDPE flat bag – optimised for the robust requirements of German and European parcel shipping. They differ from standard flat bags through higher film thicknesses (typically 70–90 microns), often through an integrated self-adhesive closure for ready-to-ship packaging, and through an optimisation of the standard sizes to common shipping requirements.

In online retail, shipping flat bags are the standard for non-fragile consignments: clothing, accessories, books, smaller consumer goods, robust hardware. They are significantly cheaper than shipping cartons and take up less volume – this saves shipping fees with volume-based parcel carriers. For online shops with a high consignment volume, the choice between carton and flat bag is an important cost factor.

Our shipping flat bag range covers the most important online-shop standard sizes: 200×300 mm (small items, jewellery), 250×350 mm (standard single consignment), 300×400 mm (jumpers), 400×500 mm (jackets), 400×600 mm (trousers, large items). With or without a self-adhesive closure, in transparent or printable film, in PCR-recycled variants for sustainable brands. On request printed with your own logo or brand branding.

Your benefits with shipping flat bags from Elke Plastic

We have imported packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1972. For online shops, constant availability is often more important than the pure film price: a missing shipping pack can delay thousands of consignments and trigger customer complaints. Our German warehouse with carton and pallet quantities guarantees supply even during the Black Friday and Christmas peak.

Our packaging specialists advise on the choice of standard size, film thickness and closure variant. Online shops often have 3–5 standard sizes that cover 80% of all consignments – we help you define the optimal set for your range. For premium brands we offer a self-adhesive closure and printing for ready-to-ship packaging. For sustainable shops, PCR-recycled variants are available.

Shipping is from our German warehouse. Shipping standard sizes are usually immediately available from a pallet. Online shops and all customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive tiered prices; larger quantities with additional quantity discounts, from a carton, pallet and container. On request we are happy to arrange call-off quotas and fixed delivery schedules. Free samples for advance testing are a matter of course.

Frequently asked questions about shipping flat bags

What distinguishes shipping flat bags from standard flat bags?

Shipping flat bags are specially optimised for parcel dispatch: higher film thicknesses (typically 70–90 microns), often with a self-adhesive closure for ready-to-ship packaging, in common online-shop standard sizes. Standard flat bags are more versatile but not specifically optimised for parcel shipping.

Which film thickness is essential for shipping?

At least 50 microns. Recommendation: 70 microns as standard, 90 microns for heavy or sharp-edged contents. Thinner films tear in rough sorting plants and lead to complaints.

What is a self-adhesive closure?

An adhesive-strip flap already fitted to the bag that is folded over the bag after filling. This turns the bag into a ready-to-ship pouch without additional adhesive tape. For online shops with high-volume shipping, a clear efficiency advantage.

Are flat bags approved for DHL shipping?

Yes, provided they meet the DHL requirements for parcel handling – minimum stability, sufficient closure, shipping-label application. Standard shipping flat bags from 70 microns meet the requirements without any trouble.

Which sizes are most common in online-shop shipping?

Most online shops have 3–5 standard sizes that cover 80% of all consignments: 250×350 mm, 300×400 mm, 400×500 mm. Specialist shops often have their own main formats – e.g. booksellers often 200×280 mm.

Are the bags waterproof?

LDPE is splash-proof and protects against brief rain exposure during shipping. For full rain protection over a longer period we recommend padded mailing envelopes or additional outer packaging.

Can the bags be printed with a brand logo?

Yes. For online shops, own printing is a clear brand advantage. Shipping bags are the customer's first brand encounter with your brand after ordering – a brand print reinforces the premium impression.

Are sustainable shipping bags available?

Yes, PCR-recycled and mono-material variants are available in the common shipping standard sizes. For eco-oriented online shops they are a visible brand signal to end customers.

What does a shipping flat bag typically cost?

Small formats from 5–10 cents, medium formats 10–20 cents, large formats 20–40 cents per unit. At pallet quantities with tiered pricing, considerably below this. Compared with shipping cartons, flat bags are typically 50–80% cheaper.

Can shipping flat bags be filled automatically?

For high-speed packaging machines, specially antistatic-treated films are recommended. Standard flat bags work without any trouble in manual or semi-automatic filling processes.

Do the bags hold up under sorting-plant stress?

70 microns: suitable for standard sorting plants. 90 microns: also for rough sorting plants or heavy contents. For particularly valuable consignments we nevertheless recommend additional padding – the packaging does not protect the contents, only the main packaging itself.

Are there mailing-pouch alternatives?

Yes. We have special mailing pouches with padding in our range. For sensitive contents, padded mailing envelopes with bubble film are the more robust choice. For uncritical contents, the flat bag is more cost-efficient.
