Film thickness in µm: how thick should a bag be?

Film thickness is given in micrometres (µm): 1 µm is one thousandth of a millimetre, so 50 µm is 0.05 mm. Thin bags of 25 to 30 µm are for light items, 50 µm is the usual standard, and 90 to 100 µm is extra strong for heavy or angular items.

Converting µm, mm and “my”

Converting micrometres to millimetres
SpecificationMeaning
1 µm (my)0.001 mm
25 µm0.025 mm
50 µm0.05 mm
100 µm0.1 mm

In the item data, the thickness is often given in millimetres, for example 0.050 mm. That corresponds to 50 µm.

How to choose the thickness

  • Light, soft items: 25 to 40 µm is enough.
  • Standard goods and food: 50 µm is a good compromise between strength and material use.
  • Heavy, pointed or angular items: 90 to 100 µm, see Extra Strong Ziplock Bags.
  • Thinner film saves material and weight; thicker film protects better against holes.

Frequently asked questions

How many micrometres is 50 my?

50 my is 50 micrometres (µm), which is 0.05 millimetres.

What thickness does a zip bag for small parts need?

For most small parts, 50 µm is enough. For pointed or heavy parts, 90 µm is safer.

Is thicker film always better?

Not always. Thicker film is more tear-resistant, but it uses more material and is less flexible. The choice depends on the weight and shape of the items.

Where can I find the thickness of an item?

In the item name and in the product data, usually in µm or in millimetres, for example 0.050 mm.
