Film thickness in µm: how thick should a bag be?
Film thickness is given in micrometres (µm): 1 µm is one thousandth of a millimetre, so 50 µm is 0.05 mm. Thin bags of 25 to 30 µm are for light items, 50 µm is the usual standard, and 90 to 100 µm is extra strong for heavy or angular items.

Thicknesses in our range
| Thickness | Examples in our range | Suitable for (guideline) |
|---|---|---|
| 25 µm | LDPE flat bags 25 µm (Flat Bags) | light items, textiles, dry food |
| 30 µm | OPP flat bags with sealed seam, cross bottom bags | baked goods, confectionery, light dry goods |
| 40 µm | PP flat bags, OPP/CPP block bottom bags and cross bottom bags | baked goods, tea, spices |
| 50 µm | LDPE zip bags, LDPE flat bags, LDPE tubular film (Ziplock Bags) | standard for small parts, spare parts, food |
| 90 µm | LDPE zip bags extra strong, PA/PE vacuum bags | heavy or angular items, vacuum packing |
| 100 µm | LDPE flat bags 100 µm, LDPE tubular film 100 µm | very heavy items, shipping, protection against punctures |
Suitability is a guideline. The information on the item is what counts.
Converting µm, mm and “my”
| Specification | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 µm (my) | 0.001 mm |
| 25 µm | 0.025 mm |
| 50 µm | 0.05 mm |
| 100 µm | 0.1 mm |
In the item data, the thickness is often given in millimetres, for example 0.050 mm. That corresponds to 50 µm.
How to choose the thickness
- Light, soft items: 25 to 40 µm is enough.
- Standard goods and food: 50 µm is a good compromise between strength and material use.
- Heavy, pointed or angular items: 90 to 100 µm, see Extra Strong Ziplock Bags.
- Thinner film saves material and weight; thicker film protects better against holes.
Frequently asked questions
How many micrometres is 50 my?
50 my is 50 micrometres (µm), which is 0.05 millimetres.
What thickness does a zip bag for small parts need?
For most small parts, 50 µm is enough. For pointed or heavy parts, 90 µm is safer.
Is thicker film always better?
Not always. Thicker film is more tear-resistant, but it uses more material and is less flexible. The choice depends on the weight and shape of the items.
Where can I find the thickness of an item?
In the item name and in the product data, usually in µm or in millimetres, for example 0.050 mm.
