What are vest carrier bags?
Vest carrier bags owe their name to their characteristic shape: two narrow carry loops at the top of the bag, which look like the sleeves of a T-shirt. They are made of thin HDPE (high-density polyethylene) – a very tensile plastic that is surprisingly tear-resistant despite a minimal wall thickness (typically 9–18 microns). Material: HDPE in detail
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) has a higher density (0.941–0.965 g/cm³) than LDPE and therefore a more compact molecular structure. This makes it:
- stronger and stiffer per wall thickness
- less stretchy, but more tensile
- rustling, with a characteristic sound
- cheap to produce
- fully recyclable (recycling code 02)
- chemically resistant to oils, acids, alkalis

Wall thickness and load capacity
Vest carrier bags are made of HDPE with wall thicknesses between 9 and 18 microns. Despite this low wall thickness they are surprisingly tear-resistant – the HDPE material is very tensile, and the load is distributed across the continuous carry loop. Important: Under the Packaging Act, lightweight plastic carrier bags of 15–49 microns have been banned since 2022. Very thin vest carrier bags under 15 microns remain permitted as knot bags for loose food (fruit and vegetable section). Carrier bags from 50 microns also remain permitted.
Packaging Act 2022: what is permitted?
Since 1 January 2022: classic vest carrier bags in the 15–49 micron range may no longer be sold to end customers. Exceptions and permitted variants:
- Knot bags under 15 microns for unpackaged food (fruit, vegetables) – still permitted without restriction
- Sturdy vest carrier bags from 50 microns wall thickness (reusable-capable) – permitted
- Industrial/B2B use (e.g. internal transport packaging) – not affected
- Use as a collection wrap in shipping – not affected
In addition: distributors must register with the LUCID packaging register and participate in a dual system (applies to all packaging, not just carrier bags).

Frequently asked questions
Are vest carrier bags still permitted?
In Germany since 2022: 15–49 microns banned, under 15 microns (knot bags for loose food) permitted, from 50 microns (reusable-capable) permitted. We supply all variants in legally compliant wall thicknesses.
Are vest carrier bags food-grade?
Most are made of food-grade PE. For direct contact with unpackaged food, look explicitly for the declaration of conformity (EU 10/2011).
What load capacity do vest carrier bags have?
Standard vest carrier bags carry 3–5 kg, more robust variants up to 12 kg. Tear resistance depends more on the HDPE quality and the weld seam than on the wall thickness.
Why does a vest carrier bag rustle?
HDPE has a compact molecular structure that crinkles when moved. The rustling is a typical HDPE feature and a reliable material indicator – LDPE does not rustle.
Are vest carrier bags waterproof?
The material itself (PE) is waterproof. However, small amounts of water can get in at the seam and the carry loops. For genuinely waterproof packaging use ziplock bags.

How do I store vest carrier bags?
Dry, dark, at room temperature. Avoid UV radiation – otherwise HDPE can become brittle over a number of months. In their original packaging they are storage-stable for many years.
What is the difference from carrier bags with a patch handle?
Vest carrier bags have carry loops made of the same film material. Carrier bags with a patch handle have a separate, welded-in handle – higher load capacity, a more refined look, a higher price per unit.
