Packaging tea and spices: what matters

Tea and spices lose aroma through light, oxygen and moisture. Light-proof, aroma-tight and resealable bags are well suited: stand-up pouches with a zip and an aluminium layer, or block bottom bags made of kraft paper. A window shows the contents but lets in some light.

What damages tea and spices

  • Light: makes colour and aroma fade.
  • Oxygen: oxidises essential oils, and the scent weakens.
  • Moisture: clumping, risk of mould, aroma loss.
  • Foreign odours: tea picks up smells easily, so use an odour-neutral material.

Window or light-proof?

A window shows customers the contents and makes selling easier in a farm shop. In return, the window lets light reach the product. For delicate teas and spices that sit on the shelf for longer, a fully light-proof bag with an aluminium layer is safer. Block bottom bags are available both with and without a window, see Block Bottom Bags with Window.

Food law and evidence

Bags for tea and spices must be suitable for food contact. The details for the specific item are in the item data and the data sheet. More on this: Food-safe: glass and fork symbol and evidence. A selection guide for all foods: Which bag for which food?

Frequently asked questions

Which bag keeps tea fresh?

A light-proof, aroma-tight and resealable bag, for example a stand-up pouch with an aluminium layer and zip.

Do tea or spices need an aroma valve?

No. A valve is meant for freshly roasted coffee, which releases CO₂. Tea and spices need aroma protection, but no valve.

Are kraft paper bags suitable for tea?

Yes, if they have a suitable inner layer and are suitable for food contact. Pure paper bags protect less against moisture than composites.

How do I best store spices?

Dry, dark and tightly closed. Bags with a zip or ziplock closure help to retain aroma and keep moisture out.
